【somber】 back to friends – Lyrics Analysis

Lyrics

Touch my body tender
‘Cause the feeling makes me weak
Kicking off the covers
I see the ceiling while you’re looking down at me

How can we go back to being friends
When we just shared a bed?
How can you look at me and pretend
I’m someone you’ve never met?

It was last December
You were layin’ on my chest
I still remember
I was scared to take a breath, didn’t want you to move your head

How can we go back to being friends
When we just shared a bed? (Yeah)
How can you look at me and pretend
I’m someone you’ve never met?

The devil in your eyes
Won’t deny the lies
You’ve sold, I’m holding on too tight
While you let go, this is casual

How can we go back to being friends
When we just shared a bed? (Yeah)
How can you look at me and pretend
I’m someone you’ve never met?

How can we go back to being friends
When we just shared a bed? (Yeah)
How can you look at me and pretend
I’m someone you’ve never met?

I’m someone you’ve never met
Oh yeah

Emotional Translation

Touch me gently.

Don’t say being by my side doesn’t feel right.

I’ll kick those covers off.

I see you looking down beneath the eaves.

I can’t imagine going back to being just friends.

Let’s stay in bed together, like that time.

I can’t believe you could ever look at me as if I don’t exist.

Do you think I’ve ever met someone like you before?

In this past year…

Were the words you said—that you wanted to be by my side—nothing but a lie?

I still remember.

In that moment, I lost my breath.

I wanted your mind to be filled with nothing but me.

I can’t imagine going back to being just friends.

Let’s stay in bed together, like that time.

I can’t believe you could ever look at me as if I don’t exist.

Do you think I’ve ever met someone like you before?

When I look into your eyes, I’m instantly captivated.

I can’t lie to the soul inside you.

I want to hold your soul close, never letting go.

Can I draw even nearer to you?

Is this relationship truly comfortable for you?

I can’t imagine going back to being just friends.

Let’s stay in bed together, like that time.

I can’t believe you could ever look at me as if I don’t exist.

Do you think I’ve ever met someone like you before?

I can’t imagine going back to being just friends.

Let’s stay in bed together, like that time.

I can’t believe you could ever look at me as if I don’t exist.

Do you think I’ve ever met someone like you before?

I’ve never met anyone as wonderful as you.

Lyrical Analysis

figure4

First, please take a look at figure1 and figure2.

From here, the words we can identify are:

meet, look, pretend, go, share, someone, bed, friend

From those, we can put them into a sentence like this:

“I want to go see you again. I want to believe I can meet you. Not just anyone, but only you. And if possible, I want to see a future with you.”

This is a softer interpretation of the words.

If I were to abstract this into one blunt expression, it would be:

“I want to make love with the one I love again.”

Although it sounds very erotic, I feel that the man in the song is shouting exactly that.

Personally, I think that inside the phrase “I want to have sex” there is not only an erotic element, but also a strong desire to create a child together and become a family. That’s why “wanting to see the future” connects to the word LOOK.

Next, please look at figure3.

This time, let’s examine the connections between words.

Focus on friend, go, let, casual.

From here, what we can read is:

In the lyrics, “While you let go. This is casual”

I translated it as:

“Can I get even closer to you? Is this relationship something comfortable for you?”

In my translation, the phrase “this relationship” refers exactly to this part.

“This relationship” = friend

We can sense that the man in the poem feels insecure about “this relationship.”

Even within the flow of the song, at the word casual, the melody shifts gradually from low to high tones, so I intentionally phrased it as a question in my translation.

Now, let’s turn to the hexagon cluster: head, breath, take, move, scared, want.

From this, we can form a passage like:

“I want everything—your breath, your thoughts, your entire headspace. And I too, filled so completely with you, have never before felt so shaken and overwhelmed—so much that it scares me.”

Here, head and breath are nouns, serving as the core around which the sentence is built.

Meanwhile, take, want, move are verbs that express the man’s restless emotions, overflowing with desire to claim the woman as his own.

And scared, as an adjective, shows that the man himself feels a terrifying intensity of love in these emotions.

Finally, let’s look at the hierarchical clustering in figure4.

① share, bed connected with remember

② Mainly someone, meet, kick connected with remember

③ remember connected to all words

① clearly refers to making love with the person he loves.

② expresses the feeling of “wanting to meet you, and no one else.”

And also overlaps with the lyric:

Kicking off the covers / I’ll kick off that cover.

Here, “the cover” refers not only to the blanket they shared in bed, but perhaps also to the woman’s complexes or defenses—things the man wants to kick away and destroy.

So, kicking off the covers becomes both:

“I remember when we made love,” and “I remember wanting to tear down the barriers you’ve put up.”

③ Since remember connects to everything, it suggests: “I remember all of this poetry, every single word.”

Final Summary

Overall, [somber] back to friends feels like pillow talk—a man filled with burning, passionate love chasing after a woman who treats him casually as just a “friend.”

When I first saw the title, I briefly wondered, “Why is it ‘friends’ in the plural, when it’s only one female friend?”

At first, I thought maybe the man was a playboy.

But that’s not the case.

That’s why it becomes friends—the two of them together.

I hope my interpretation is correct.

So then, that’s it for now.

Wishing you a relaxing time!

(Of course, this remains only within the realm of speculation.)
